Sierpinski quilt

So, here's a project I've been working on for quite a while. I originally started this quilt a few years ago, and have been working on it off and on ever since. I may even finish it some day. (I'd say it's about halfway done at present? Mebbe less?) What we see here is the basic plan - a Sierpinski carpet with 3 levels of recursion. I ended up making the smallest level of squares 3.5 inches per side, meaning the overall dimension of the final quilt will be 94.5" x 94.5", or a little less than 8 feet per side (I think I was trying to go for something for a queen-sized bed?) On retrospect this is kinda crazy, and if I could do it over I'd probably go for 81" x 81", or 3" squares at the smallest level. Ah well.

There are 64 of the small squares, 8 medium ones, and (obviously) one large one in the center of foreground material. Rather than have to sew together 8 background squares to surround every small foreground square, I used a system of 2 small squares and 2 rectangles. I then alternated the way the rectangles were oriented (vertical or horizontal) in a checkerboard pattern for the bigger sections (you can kinda see this in the picture - the slightly darker blue lines indicate where the seams are).

I'm not sure what I was thinking with the rainbow pattern in the foreground either. I knew I didn't just want it to be two colours - far too boring - but I may have gone a bit too far in the other direction. Another thing I'd redo if I were to make a second one (ha!) would be to change that part - mebbe different colours for each level of recursion, or something like that. The colours shown here are an approximation of the colours I had on the original plan. The fabric I ended up using differs a bit, but follows the overall rainbow look as best I could with what mum had in the attic. I'll go more into that when/if I get around to posting some in-progress shots.
